Feb. 26--McCarran International Airport kicked off the first month of 2014 with a healthy increase in passenger traffic.

Nearly 3.3 million passengers passed through the airport's gates in January, up 5.3 percent from January 2013, according to figures released this afternoon by the Clark County Department of Aviation.

The increase in passenger traffic was recorded among both domestic and international travelers, according to officials. For the month, McCarran recorded 2.98 million domestic passengers, 5.1 percent more than the 2.84 million domestic passengers in January 2013. Airport officials said more than 241,000 international travelers passed through McCarran in January, 7.8 percent more than the 223,000 from the same month a year ago.

Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier at McCarran, flew 1.27 million domestic passengers in and out of Las Vegas in January, up 5.3 percent from the 1.21 million in January 2013.

Several carriers had double-digit percentage increases for their year-over-year totals for the month: Air Tran, 51 percent (27,379 passengers); Virgin America, 38 percent (62,072); Spirit, 29.7 percent (180,818); Sun Country, 24.7 percent (17,079) and Frontier, 14.6 percent (45,908).

Among international airlines, WestJet was McCarran's busiest carrier. The Canadian low-cost carrier flew 88,811 passengers in and out of Las Vegas in January, compared to 82,074 in January 2013.

The one sour note in today's report: Traffic was down a modest one half of 1 percent from December, when more than 3.3 million passengers flew in and out of McCarran.
