Jan. 05--Onslow County is set to spend more than $427,000 to design and get bids for work at Albert J. Ellis Airport if approved by the Onslow County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioners are being asked to authorize work to design a new general aviation and corporate terminal, roadways, parking, and a rental car service site at the airport during their Monday night meeting.

According to information from the county, design and bidding services for the terminal, associated roadways, parking and itinerate aircraft parking apron is not to exceed $329,426 while design and bidding services for the rental car site is not to exceed $98,000.

The design and construction of the terminal, roadways, parking and apron will be paid for by FAA and NCDOT grants, passenger facility charges, previously issued installment purchase and tenant funding, according to the county. The rental car replacement site will be paid for by rental car contract facility charges.

Airport Director Chris White said the terminal -- which is where private, military and corporate pilots along with charters will come into -- will include offices, conference rooms and waiting space for passengers.

The new 10,000 square-feet terminal area will replace the current one which is more than 40 years old and undersized, according to information from the county.

White said the current building is about 5,000 square-feet with half of that holding a hangar.

If the design work is approved, work could be under construction by late summer. White said he hopes to have the general aviation and corporate terminal open by late summer 2015, when the new passenger terminal is also slated to be complete.

The commissioners also will:

- Hold a public hearing for 93.07 acres in Stump Sound area that owner Doug Padgett would like to rezone from Rural Agriculture to Residential 15. The property, identified as tax parcel 773-115, is located on Old Folkstone Road. A decision could be made following the hearing.

- Appoint members to the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.

- Appoint members to the Eastern Carolina Human Services Agency, Inc. Board of Directors.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jacksonville City Hall at 815 New Bridget St.
