Dec. 09--General-aviation pilots using Ryan Airfield will have new options for maintenance and support services starting in January, under an agreement approved by the board of the Tucson Airport Authority.

Velocity Air Inc. was awarded a five-year contract to become a so-called "fixed base operator" at Ryan, 9698 W. Ajo Highway, which is managed by the Airport Authority along with Tucson International Airport.

Up to now, Ryan has been without a fixed base operator, which typically provides ground support services to aircraft and amenities for passengers and crews.

Velocity Air is headed by owner and President Tim Amalong, a fourth-generation Southern Arizonan with more than 23 years in the aviation industry.

Velocity has operated at TIA for 13 years and recently was awarded contracts to provide maintenance for all Civil Air Patrol aircraft in Arizona and aircraft parts and supply services to the Pima County Sheriff's Department Air Unit. In addition to the maintenance and support services, Velocity Air will also operate its flight training schools, Double Eagle Aviation and Arizona Aero-Tech, at both airports, according to the Airport Authority.

Velocity Air is leasing three 3,600-square-foot hangars, one of which includes an office, break room, restrooms and a maintenance shop, and 15,000 square feet of adjacent ramp space for aircraft parking. The facilities include a pilot lounge and an available conference room.

Velocity Air will also take over the responsibility of running and maintaining Ryan's aircraft fuel service, which has been handled by TAA.
