Fog Delays Flights at Roanoke Regional Airport

Nov. 27--Today is expected to be busy at Roanoke Regional Airport as airlines accommodate people whose flights were canceled by locally foggy conditions Tuesday.

The clouds were 400 feet above the ground at the airport at midafternoon Tuesday, and pilots don't like to fly unless the ceiling is at least 500 feet, airport spokeswoman Amanda DeHaven said.

As of 5 p.m., airlines had canceled seven outgoing flights, and six incoming flights did not arrive, DeHaven said.

Airlines would try to find room on planes today for those affected. Travelers who rise early, check the Web for the latest information and arrive two hours early today will fare best, DeHaven said.

The number of people being reshuffled was not available. However, this is not the pre-Thanksgiving flying rush. That occurred this past Friday and Saturday, DeHaven said.

Light snow was forecast for today. DeHaven said that should not be a problem.

The fog delay affected, among others, some people headed to balmy St. Petersburg, Fla., where it was 80 degrees Tuesday afternoon. Allegiant's plane to Roanoke landed in Raleigh, N.C., to avoid the Roanoke fog. The airline gave those travelers waiting in Roanoke pizza during their long wait to depart. By 5 p.m., they were still waiting and facing a possible one-day delay.
