Nov. 07--A $50,000 grant was received from the Kentucky Department of Aviation recently to aid in the repair of the apron (taxiway) at the Tucker-Guthrie Memorial Airport in Harlan.
Harlan County Airport Board Chairman Mark Miracle said the grant was for "the crack and seal coat of the airport's apron, along with apron marking."
Miracle added the apron is the roadway which planes use to leave the runway and taxi to the hangers.
"Selby Asphalt Maintenance Inc., of Russell Springs, took about a week to get the cracks filled and then applied three coats of seal coat to the apron -- they did an excellent job," said Miracle. "Now, we have the painters up there from Central Seal, of Danville, painting the runway hold lines and a compass rose, which is a compass that points east, west, north and south and allows you to taxi your airplane up to it and align the compass inside your plane to make sure it is working correctly."
Miracle said the grant didn't cover the entire apron area, which needed repairing.
"We got enough money to do approximately two-thirds of the apron, but we're pleased to have received this grant from the Kentucky Department of Aviation," said Miracle.
