Oct. 10--The Glynn County Airport Commission will vote Tuesday whether to rescind a policy that requires airport tenants to pay a maintenance and repair fee in addition to their rents.

Airport Commission Executive Director Robert Burr told the commission's finance committee Wednesday that airport officials had determined to rescind the policy, which assessed tenants a nickel per square foot of rented space.

Burr said the policy proved to be a source of contention between tenants and airport officials, and the vote Tuesday will formally end it.

In addition, Burr said the commission will need to amend its budget to account for a loss of law enforcement reimbursement funds from the Transportation Security Administration. Burr said previously the TSA paid for 10 hours of security each day, but cuts to its budget led to a lower reimbursement.

Negotiations with the TSA moved the amount up to eight hours a day between October and December, and nine hours a day between January and September.

Burr said the cost for hours not funded by the TSA will average about $27,000 a year. "You need a police presence at the airport," Burr said Wednesday. "The public wants it. I think it's money well spent. I would recommend this amendment."

The airport commission also pays Glynn County $40,000 a year for fire protection.

The full airport commission will vote on the fee and security changes at its meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport.
