Sept. 11--When you buy a ticket, the federal government adds a few dollars' tax to its price.
That money goes to what's known as a federal aviation trust fund, Boise Airport Director Rebecca Hupp said. The Federal Aviation Administration then disburses grants to airports around the country to help them upgrade and maintain their infrastructure.
This particular grant is earmarked for four projects at the Boise Airport: rehabilitation of a taxiway, improvements to a runway's safety areas, relocation of vehicle service roadways and installation of enhanced security equipment.
The airport is in the process of awarding contracts for the vehicle service and security equipment projects, spokeswoman Patti Miller said. Work is scheduled to begin in October.
The airport will ask for bids on the other two projects in October. Work on them should begin in the spring, Miller said.
The Boise City Council officially accepted the grant Tuesday.
