Enterprise Airport to Receive Upgrades

Enterprise's Municipal Airport will be undergoing some major improvements with $300,000 in grants

Sept. 05--Enterprise's Municipal Airport will be undergoing some major improvements soon with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) allocating $300,000 for an Automated Weather Observation System, (AWOS), Mayor Kenneth Boswell reported at Tuesday night's regular meeting of the City Council.

Enterprise is expected to receive another $79,000 for airport projects in 2014. The city may only have to match 2.5 percent of that total.

Boswell said that an access ramp would also be added to the terminal building.

In other business: Michael Walters was sworn into the office of Director of Engineering for Enterprise by Mayor Boswell during Tuesday night's meeting.

Vickie Tonn, representing Coffee County Habitat for Humanity, received permission for the organization's fundraiser, a 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run to be held from 6:30-9:30 a.m. downtown on Oct. 19. Tonn said the event should end close to 9 a.m., in time for the Fall Festival to begin. Tonn hopes to have as many as 100 runners for the event. Proceeds will help build a home.

A representative of HighPointe Church received approval for the church's "Praying a Circle around the Circle" prayer walk, set for Sept. 28. Police Chief T.D. Jones told the council that there would be no children involved in the walk and that those involved will be off of the road enough where there would be no need for assistance from his department.

Fire Chief Byron Herring asked for and received permission to seek a bid for a Class A fire truck to replace a 27-year-old model currently used by his department.

The council approved two matters concerning the Farmer's Market. The city will pay CDG Engineers & Associates $26,000 for their services on the Farmer's Market project, as well Donofro Architects, Inc., which will receive $27,000 for its work on the same project.

A request was approved for BRB Enterprises to have property at 1232 Geneva Highway rezoned from a Residential District to a General Business District.

The tennis courts that were resurfaced will have problems fixed soon, according to Mayor Boswell, who added that the remainder of the payment would be released at that time.

In Recreation Department news:

--Youth football will begin Oct. 1.

--Youth golf begins Sept. 7.

--Adult softball leagues begin Sept. 6.

--The Splash Pad at the Recreational Complex will close for the season on Sept. 30.
