DENVER, CO — July 31, 2013 — Denver International Airport’s South Terminal Redevelopment Program (STRP) is preparing to pass an important milestone as workers get ready to reopen the Terminal West roadways and remove the west detour. Beginning Friday, August 2 at 11 p.m., all inbound traffic will be routed to the Terminal East as crews begin removing the west detours and restoring traffic to its normal configuration on the elevated roadways leading to levels four, five and six of Terminal West. Exits from the Terminal West parking areas will remain open. During this time, all travelers will use Terminal East for pick-up and drop-off. By 4 a.m. Saturday, August 3, the newly rebuilt Terminal West elevated roadways will reopen to traffic and return to their normal pick-up and drop-off configuration.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience during the last year while we rebuilt the Terminal West roadways to accommodate the new hotel building,” said Kim Day, Manager of Aviation. “The South Terminal Redevelopment Program continues to take shape. In addition to reopening our Terminal West roadways, the elevator cores for the hotel are now complete and installation of the glass canopy for the Public Transit Center is underway.”
Crews have also completed the first four floors of the Public Transit Center and anticipate completion of the train hall canopy by the end of the year.
Even though the detours will be removed, work will continue in the Terminal West area and motorists may encounter temporary lane closures for the next several weeks.
Later this fall, crews will begin reconstruction of the level four and six roadways and will install detours for traffic exiting Terminal East. The Terminal East work and detour is expected to have minimal impacts on traffic.
The STRP is made up of three independent, yet physically integrated projects, which include the design and construction of:
• A 519-room Westin hotel and conference center;
• A Public Transit Center, which includes a Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail station with trains making the approximately 30-minute trip connecting the airport with Denver’s Union Station, and;
• A Public Plaza, Denver’s newest venue for programs and events where passengers and visitors can find entertainment, relaxation, art, and restaurants.
