Aug. 01--American Airlines is changing the way it gets passengers between Albuquerque and Chicago O'Hare.

The airline on Thursday began serving the route with a large regional jet that offers more first-class seating and extra legroom in some main-cabin rows.

The aircraft -- an Embraer E-175 -- will be used on one of the airline's three daily flights between ABQ and ORD, replacing a CRJ-700, according to a spokeswoman.

The Embraer has 76 seats, including 12 in first-class and 20 main-cabin seats with extra room.

The CRJ-700 seats 64 and will continue to be used on two of American's daily flights between Albuquerque and Chicago.

The aircraft change is part of a larger plan that allows American "to better match customer demand in markets where, until (Thursday) it could only offer larger mainline aircraft or smaller regional jets," the company said in a news release.

The Embraer jets will carry the American Eagle brand. Republic Airlines will operate them.
