July 09--CANON CITY -- Conveyor belt builder Portec does not foresee any major operational changes following the company's recent purchase by the Interroll Group, company officials say. The plant employs about 100 local residents.

Portec and Switzerlandbased Interroll build conveyor belt systems for everything from airports and factories to supermarkets. Florence natives Charlie and Ed Fry invented and built conveyor belt systems to launch Portec in 1957.

"This is the best way to take advantage of growth opportunities and continue our long-term success in a global market," said Marco Oropeza, president of Portec Inc.

For Interroll, the acquisition will strengthen its business activities and market presence in North America, company officials say.

Oropeza said Portec will become a stronger business with Interroll.

He does not anticipate any material changes in how the company is operated, he said. Interroll Group will finance the acquisition with cash, according to a news release. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Portec achieved a double- digit operating profit and a turnover of around $20 million worth of product in 2012.
