19 Apply for Two Spots on Hillsborough Aviation Board

The governor selects three of the board members, while the mayor of Tampa and a rotating Hillsborough County commissioner round out the board that sets policy for Tampa International Airport and three county general aviation airports.

June 06--TAMPA -- Nineteen people have filed applications with the Governor's Appointments Office to fill two vacant positions on the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority board, a governor's press aide said Thursday.

Gov. Rick Scott must fill positions on the five-person board held by former board chairman Steve Burton, who died in April, and current board member and retired physician Joe Diaco, whose term is up in July. Diaco has applied to retain his post.

The governor selects three of the board members, while the mayor of Tampa and a rotating Hillsborough County commissioner round out the board that sets policy for Tampa International Airport and three county general aviation airports.

"The governor will choose an applicant; however, it is possible that others may apply for the current vacant seat before a selection is made," spokesman John Tupps said in an email from the governor's press office.

The pool of applicants will be considered for both vacant aviation authority positions, Tupps said.

The applicants include Tom Scott, senior pastor of the 34th Street Church of God and a past member of the aviation authority board, and Sandy Mackinnon, founder and chief executive of Yale Lift Trucks of Florida and Georgia.

Three retired Air Force officers, Ret. Brig. Gen. Arthur Diehl III, former deputy director of plans for the U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base; Ret. Col. Evelio Otero, a former division chief for the Special Operations Command at MacDill; and Ret. Col. Neal Carbaugh, a former F-16 pilot, filed applications.

Two of the applicants are bankers: Gregory Bryant, president and chief executive of Bay Cities bank, and Henry Gonzalez III, Tampa region president of Platinum Bank.

Other applicants are: Donald Phillips, trustee at Phillips Equity & Trust; Kelly S. O'Brien, president of KSO properties real estate and a jet-rated pilot; Edward Kampsen, a surgeon; Eddie Adams Jr., owner-architect with Adams and associates; Michael Griffin, senior account director with Vertical integration Inc. real estate; William Ponton, of Cordoba Development companies; Hung Mai, president of MCA engineering; Steve Cona III, president and chief executive of Associated Builders and Contractors; Gary Harrod, chief executive of Harrod Properties Inc.; Martin Garcia, managing director of Pinehill Capital partners investment firm; and Wilhelmina Curtis, an attorney with Wilhelmina B.
