High Fees Haven't Slowed The Baggage Check-in Line

May 31, 2013
Only 19 percent of travelers say they always carry on luggage.

With the airlines collecting record bag fees, some 55 percent of all travelers still check their luggage either all or some of the time, according to a recent survey conducted by Chicago-based ground transportation service provider The GO Group LLC and its GO Airport Express unit.

More than 570 travelers were polled on their luggage preferences:

  • 27 percent said they always check their luggage.
  • 28 percent said they both check and carry on.
  • Only 19 percent said they always carry on.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the country's 15 largest carriers collected a combined $3.5 billion in bag fees in 2012 as they continually seek ways to generate non-airfare revenue.

GO Airport Express provides airport shuttles to and from O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airports, polled travelers nationwide. The firm traces its founding to 1853 and the Parmelee Transportation company, which provided a carriage service between Chicago's railroad stations and the downtown hotels.

The GO Group provides airport shuttle services. Its members transport some 13 million passengers to and from airports in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Europe annually. Find out more at www.goairportshuttle.com.
