THIRUVANANTHAPURAMN, May 15 -- Over 500 ground handling employees of the Air India- Singapore Airport Terminal Services (AI-SATS) went on a lightning strike demanding a wage hike on Tuesday, hitting services from the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.

The strike was called off late night following negotiations between the trade unions and the AI-SATS officials in the presence of police, and Labour Department officials.

With the employees going on a strike, several tonnes of perishable cargo were off-loaded and the labour officials launched a massive trouble-shooting exercise to sort out the dispute. Flights were also delayed by several minutes.

Air India- Singapore Airport Terminal Services is an Air India and Singapore Airport Terminal Services joint venture for ground handling, loading and unloading and cabin cleaning for eight international airlines plus Air India and the Air India Express.

The strike began on Monday midnight after talks between the trade union leaders and the AI-SATS officials failed to reach a consensus regarding wage hike for the employees.

The employees alleged that the management went back on a promise to raise the wages from Rs 7,250 to Rs 9,250.

After the employees went on a strike, export cargo, consisting mainly of perishable goods to the West Asia, was off-loaded.

AI-SATS Response We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers and are taking requisite measures so as to ensure smooth functioning of airport services.
