Unite issued the following news release:
Unite, Britain's biggest union, is making preparations to ballot its members for strike action over a two year pay freeze imposed by Menzies World Cargo on its staff at Heathrow.
Talks to attempt to resolve the dispute broke down this week without agreement and the union is urging the company to return to negotiations.
Menzies made 35.6 million pounds in underlying operating profits in 2012 from its aviation division, which is 16 percent up on 2011. Its clients include Air India, China Airlines, Kuwait, Asiana, Gulf Air, Lufthansa, MEA, Egypt Air, Austrian, MNG, SAS, Thai, TAP, Transero and Aegean.
Unite national officer, Oliver Richardson said:
"It beggars belief that a company making millions in profits is freezing workers' pay for two years. Our members have delivered these profits for Menzies and they view Menzies' refusal to recognise their contribution as an act of greed. Unite will be balloting for strike action very shortly but hope the company will see sense and get back around the negotiating table."
Unite represents 294 workers at Menzies World Cargo at Heathrow. The company has frozen pay for 2012 and 2013.
