A MAJOR UK aviation company is to build a new headquarters at the Aerohub Enterprise Zone (EZ) at Newquay Cornwall airport, creating 30 jobs.

Apple Aviation, which specialises in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), announced its plans, which include a 35,000sq ft hangar, on Monday.

The company currently operates at Manchester, East Midlands, London Heathrow, Paris and Brussels, as well as airports in the Middle East and Asia. Clients include Lessors, Thomas Cook, Thales, DHL, ILFC, BMI Regional and American Airlines.

Bosses said they plan to employ "up to 30 highly skilled employees, including aircraft engineers, in the first three years". It joins helicopter firm AgustaWestland on the site, as well as the recently opened Classic Air Force visitor attraction at the only aerospacefocused EZ in the country. EZs are a government initiative to boost local economies and business opportunities by allowing companies to take advantage of benefits, including business rate relief and relaxed planning regulations.

Bernard Longman, commercial director, said: "Newquay has been selected as the site for our new MRO facility due to the excellent infrastructure which the airport has to offer plus the benefits of developing our new business venture within the enterprise zone.

"We look forward to building relationships with the local community and businesses, in addition to contributing to the economy in the South West."

Apple Aviation will provide a range of maintenance capabilities which will benefit current and new airlines operating at Newquay.

The MRO facility will include an aircraft storage and recycling area, subject to approval by the UK Environment Agency, and is due to open in September 2013.

Chris Pomfret, chairman of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, said: "Apple Aviation is a major player in the aviation industry. "Its presence underlines the commercial attractiveness of Aerohub in Cornwall and the importance of having won Enterprise Zone status. They not only bring highly skilled jobs to the area but will also support growth in the local supply chain."
