Delta Air Lines along with the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) will invest $229m to overhaul Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport.
Work on the project has already started and it will be executed in several phases with scheduled completion in 2015.
The Terminal 5 modernisation project involves doubling the size of the ticketing lobby and security screening checkpoints, as well as the addition of a separate lobby, checkpoint, and a new private VIP check-in lobby.
The project includes the renovation of the Delta Sky Club to incorporate a full-service bar and additional recharge stations for personal electronic devices.
New baggage carousels will also be added along with modernised facilities to enhance international baggage recheck, while 15 new restaurants and shops are also expected to be commissioned during 2013.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said that the $4.1bn modernisation at LAX is mainly aimed at improving domestic travel, as well as updating the international terminal.
"By overhauling Terminal 5 at LAX, Delta Air Lines helps us ensure that LAX becomes the premier gateway to Los Angeles and to the rest of the United States," Villaraigosa said.
Delta Air Line has offered $12m for the project, with $25m in reimbursements from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for security-screening measures, while the remaining funds will be raised through LAWA commercial paper / long-term debt, LAWA cash on hand and passenger facility charges.
The airport is also expanding the capacity of the current Tom Bradley International Terminal through the addition of new gates to accommodate passenger loads for larger new generation aircraft, as well as a dining hall and shops.
