WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 -- The U.S. Department of Transportation issued the following press release:
Today, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced he is appointing Lynn Deavers as the U.S. Department of Transportation's Accountability Officer to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). Deavers will report directly to Secretary LaHood on all matters relating to the accountability, transparency and governance of MWAA staff and the MWAA Board of Directors.
Deavers is replacing departing MWAA Accountability Officer, Kimberly Moore, who is assuming a new role as Counsel for Investigations and Oversight for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure later this month.
"I congratulate Lynn on her new role and I am confident that as the Accountability Officer, she will help further ensure that MWAA's policies and practices meet the high standards of ethics and fiscal responsibility that the public expects," said Secretary LaHood.
Since Secretary LaHood appointed an Accountability Officer in July, MWAA has put in place new travel and ethics policies, post-employment and nepotism restrictions, and terminated all contracts with former board members and employees that were not competitively awarded. In addition to improved Board transparency, all employees have completed required ethics training and quarterly acquisition reports and forecasts have been provided to the Department. The MWAA board also approved a new amendment to the lease with the DOT which gives the Transportation Secretary oversight of MWAA policies and procedures moving forward. MWAA procurement policies are currently under review and personnel policies will be assessed later in 2013.
Deavers will serve as Accountability Officer until a permanent Inspector General for MWAA is established by Congress. Deavers is a career attorney in the U.S. Department of Transportation's Office of General Counsel, where she has focused on ethics, oversight and procurement issues. She is a former litigator and a graduate of The George Washington University Law School.
