Dubai: The purpose-built Concourse A terminal in the emirate which started operations on last Wednesday with the first A380 take-off has created a new milestone in the history of the UAE's aviation industry, Gulf News said.

The daily in its Sunday editorial said that this is the first airport terminal facility which is capable of handling Superjumbos as the Gulf state currently owns the largest A380 fleet in the world. With a US$ 22 billion (Dh 80.91 billion) representation or 28% of Dubai's economy, aviation is a significant driving force of the emirate's economic development.

Built at an expense of Dh 11 billion, the terminal facility is going to crease the passenger-handling capacity of Dubai International Airport from the present 60 million to 75 million.

Concourse A will help the airport to become the biggest hub across the globe for international passengers across the globe, surpassing London's Heathrow Airport and Paris' Charles deGaulle Airport.

The next project of the airport Concourse D, a part of the Dh 28 billion expansion program, which is going to increase the passenger-handling capacity to 90 million is going to be inaugurated in 2018.
