Runway closures mean delays at SFO

Jan. 4, 2013

Jan. 04--Even on sunny days travelers flying to and from San Francisco International Airport may see extra delays in 2013.

That's because the airport will be temporarily shutting down some runways in January, April and June as part of a multiyear construction project. Travelers on shorter, West Coast flights could see their departures pushed back by 30-45 minutes, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said.

The delays are due to a federally required lengthening of runways that is intended to make air travel safer. In addition to tacking tarmac on to the existing runways, work crews will have to move landing lights and other infrastructure. The federally funded work is expected to wrap up by the fall of 2015, Yakel said.

Runway 28L is slated to be closed Jan. 11-14, Jan. 18-21, Jan. 25-28 and June 25-26. Runway 28R is scheduled to close April 5-8, April 12-15, April 19-22, April 26-29 and June 27-28.
