Nov. 30, 2012

Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has signed a contract with construction contractor Al Jaber L.E.G.T. Engineering and Contracting (ALEC) L.C.C. to design and build an INNOVIA APM 300 automated people mover (APM) system for the Dubai International Airport. The transit system will connect the existing Terminal 1 to the new Concourse 4. The contract is valued at approximately 392 million AED (83 million euro, $107 million US). The Dubai International Airport is undergoing a massive expansion programme which will boost its capacity from 60 million to 90 million passengers per year by 2018. Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects awarded local construction contractor ALEC the contract to build the new Concourse 4 in February 2012 with a build-programme of 28 months. Bombardier is a sub-contractor to ALEC and it will lead the project to design and supply all of the system-wide electrical and mechanical (E&M) elements of the 1.5 km elevated APM system in a 24-month delivery programme. Bombardier s scope includes 18 INNOVIA APM 300 cars with BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) technology for driverless operation. Bombardier will also provide project management, systems engineering and integration, testing and commissioning. Much of the technology will be supplied from Bombardier s facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Mohammed Sarfraaz Ali, Bombardier Transportation s Chief Country Representative for the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, said: Bombardier s experience in delivering, operating and maintaining turnkey people mover systems at the world s leading airports is unrivalled. Our new generation INNOVIA APM 300 transit technology will provide comfortable and convenient transportation for airport passengers travelling between Terminal 1 and the new Concourse 4. The new transit system will support the Dubai International Airport in realizing its ambition of becoming the world s leading airport, not only in terms of size, but in the high quality services it provides to passengers. Dubai International Airport is the world s fourth busiest airport for international passenger traffic with more than 150 airlines providing services to 220 destinations across six continents. It is also the global aviation hub for Emirates, the world s fastest growing international airline, which provides 60 per cent of the airport s traffic. The INNOVIA APM 300 platform is Bombardier s new generation of APM technology. It has all of the flexibility needed to meet the specific system requirements of airports and urban transit authorities as it enables numerous configurations due to many customizable features and flexible operating modes. The sleek, aerodynamic vehicles can operate in coupled trains of up to six cars providing generous passenger capacities in the lightweight and recyclable aluminium carbodies.
