L.A. Council panel backs more airport commission meetings in Van Nuys

Nov. 27--A City Council committee backed a plan Monday to improve community relations at Van Nuys Airport, but stopped short of more sweeping proposals, such as creating a separate airport commission or hiring a private operator for the airport.

The Trade, Commerce and Tourism Committee recommended that the Board of Airport Commissioners hold meetings four times a year at Van Nuys.

The recommendations are part of a plan to encourage dialogue between the commissioners, Los Angeles World Airport executives, and locals in Van Nuys.

For months, some San Fernando Valley activists have complained that LAWA staff focuses on LAX and ignores VNY.

In response to those concerns, City Councilman Tony Cardenas -- who was recently elected to Congress -- ordered a report exploring handing management duties to a new entity, or creating a separate commission, among other topics.

The report, released this spring and presented at Monday's meeting, didn't recommend either scenario.

Creation of a separate airport commission at Van Nuys Airport would require an amendment to the City Charter, a costly endeavor, the report noted.

Additionally, "there is no reason to believe that a private management firm, under contract to the Board, would be more responsive than LAWA management and staff," the report noted.

Miguel Franco, legislative director for Cardenas, told committee members his office agreed with the recommendations in the report.

The committee also heard from LAWA Airport Manager Jess Romo, who testified that increased outreach is already being done with groups like the Van Nuys Airport Advisory Council.

No local activists testified at Monday's meeting.

The City Council will take up the report in early December.
