US-based airport operator Houston Airport System has rolled out a new online tool that will inform passengers of the estimated time required to clear security checkpoints at George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport.
The new time-measurement system on the Houston Airport System website calculates wait times based on bluetooth signals and allows passengers to view checkpoint wait times, updated every 15 minutes, at each gate.
The data will be displayed as one of three levels of waiting time for each checkpoint. Green suggests passengers to wait for less than 10 minutes, yellow for 10 to 15 minutes, while red advises passengers to wait for more than 15 minutes.
Houston Airport System Technology Infrastructure assistant director Jeff Bream said: "This initiative allows us to be transparent in our operational efficiencies and provide the travelling public with a true snapshot of how much time they need to budget to be processed at any of our nine checkpoints in Houston."
The collection of real-time data will allow the wait time programme to measure the average time a passenger spends while passing through the security checkpoints.
Houston Airport System chief information officer Lisa Kent said that the new technology has been deployed to enhance the customer experience.
"We've equipped all eight checkpoints at our five terminals at Bush Intercontinental and our single checkpoint at Hobby with this online tool," Kent said.
Developed in collaboration with Georgia-based Infax, the new technology will assist both airports in managing the heavy passenger traffic expected during the Thanksgiving holiday season.
