EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- NAV CANADA, the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) for Canada, is deploying Saab Sensis' Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) technology at Springbank, Alberta. The WAM system will enhance the safety of flight around Springbank Airport by providing NAV CANADA air traffic controllers with additional surveillance coverage not available with the existing radar.
The WAM system will provide additional coverage from 100 feet to 1,000 feet Above Ground Level (AGL) around the airport, providing surveillance data to a NAV CANADA radar data processor.

Multilateration uses multiple low-maintenance, non-rotating sensors to triangulate aircraft location based on transponder signals, providing air traffic controllers with precise aircraft position and identification information regardless of weather conditions. With a higher update rate and greater positional accuracy than traditional radar, multilateration delivers effective surveillance for increased safety, capacity and efficiency of airspace and surface operations.
By employing advanced processing techniques, a Saab Sensis multilateration system uses the minimal number of sensors for a less complex, lower lifecycle cost solution. Additionally, each multilateration sensor supports Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B), providing an infrastructure that is ready for today's surveillance needs and tomorrow's avionics.
