U.S.-based low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) said it has reported September 2012 consolidated traffic results for Southwest Airlines and AirTran.
AirTran became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines Co. on May 2, 2011. For purposes of comparability, year-to-date 2011 traffic results presented in the accompanying tables include the combined results of Southwest Airlines and AirTran for periods prior to the acquisition date. The company said it flew 7.8 b revenue passenger miles in September 2012, compared to 7.9 b RPMs flown in September 2011, a decrease of 2.1%. Available seat miles decreased 1.0 % to 10.1 b in September 2012 from 10.2 b ASMs in September 2011. The September 2012 load factor was 77.0 %, compared to 77.8 % in September 2011. For September 2012, passenger revenue per ASM (PRASM) is estimated to have decreased in the two to three percent range as compared to September 2011. For third quarter 2012, PRASM is estimated to have increased approximately one % as compared to third quarter 2011. Southwest said that, for the third quarter of 2012, the company flew 27.2 b RPMs, compared to 27.3 b RPMs flown in the same period in 2011, a decrease of 0.6 %. Third quarter 2012 ASMs decreased 0.7 % to 33.1 b from the third quarter 2011 level of 33.3 b. The third quarter 2012 load factor was 82.1 %, compared to the load factor of 82.0 % for the same period in 2011. For the first nine months of 2012, the company flew 78.1 b RPMs, compared to 78.7 b combined RPMs flown in the same period in 2011, a decrease of 0.8 %. The year-to-date 2012 ASMs decreased 0.3 % to 96.9 b from the combined ASMs of 97.2 for the same period in 2011. The year-to-date 2012 load factor was 80.5 %, compared to the combined load factor of 80.9 % for the same period in 2011.
