Over 70 airplanes will cruise through the streets of Palm Springs on Wednesday, Oct. 10 for a "Parade of Planes" to kick off the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Aviation Summit, Oct. 11-13 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

The parade, which kicks off at 10 a.m. at Palm Springs International Airport, consists of a one-mile route west along Alejo Road from the back entrance of the Airport and then south on Avenida Caballeros ending at the Convention Center, where the aircraft will be on display inside and outside the venue for three days.

On the last day of the summit, the planes will once again parade to the Airport starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 going east along Amado Road, north on Sunrise and then east along Alejo Road ending back at the Airport.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Oct. 10 through 9 a.m. on Oct. 15, Kirk Douglas Road will be closed to all vehicle traffic to accommodate AOPA aircraft parking. Travelers should use the El Cielo entrance to access the Airport.

The AOPA summit is one of the industry's largest aviation tradeshow and conventions, according to James Canfield, executive director of the Palm Springs Convention Center.

"Airplanes of all styles and sizes cruise along the palm tree lined streets of Palm Springs while residents and visitors wave to them and welcome them to our city," said Canfield. "It truly supports our message that we are an aviation-friendly city for business and leisure travel."

Thousands of pilots and aviation enthusiasts will attend the summit, a three-day event offering informative seminars, interactive exhibits, a large marketplace featuring the latest gadgets and technologies along with opportunities to meet and hear from aviation leaders. In addition, film and TV pilots will be on hand including actor Harrison Ford, who will participate in Friday's keynote and the "Night for Flight" benefit. Stars from Discovery Channel's Flying Wild Alaska to also be on hand, including Dave Coulier of TV's Full House and Craig Hosking, one of Hollywood's most experienced precision pilots.

Along with educational programming, conference attendees will experience the Palm Springs Air Museum, which houses one of the country's largest World War II flyable aircraft and the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

"The City of Palm Springs is proud and excited to once again welcome the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association to our beautiful destination," said Mayor Steve Pougnet.

"We've gone to great lengths to ensure they experience the best of all that Palm Springs has to offer and I encourage everyone in the Coachella Valley to come out on Oct. 10 and check out the spectacular "Parade of Planes. It's sure to be a sight to behold!" For any query with respect to this article or any other content requirement, please contact Editor at [email protected]
