Denmark's Billund airport, the first to roll out print-at-home baggage tags
Billund Airport has put in place a system to allow passengers to print baggage tags and boarding cards at home, becoming the first airport in the world to offer such a service.
The new service at Billund Airport in western Denmark follows a successful six-month trial which started in March this year.
The main aim is to speed up processing of passengers at the airport by avoiding long lines and shortening wait times.
The tags can be printed onto a standard A4 sheet of paper and then folded following instructions. After picking up a plastic cover (free at the airport) to insert the tag, passengers with tagged bags can go directly to the dedicated 'express drop desk.'
Billund is the country's second largest airport, handling over 2.7 million passengers in 2011. Its popularity is largely due to its proximity to the Legoland Theme Park, opened in 1968 next to the original Lego factory. The Legoland theme park has become one of the most popular attractions in the country, attracting up to 1.6 million visitors a year.
Other procedures have been installed in several airports seeking to reduce long lines and waiting times. American Airlines installed in January a series of kiosks at Los Angeles Airport, eliminating all of its counters. JetBlue Airways has put in place a system in Las Vegas where passengers can go through a self-boarding gate to get onto their plane.
