Airport Security 'Precheck' Program An Improvement

A spokesman for United says precheck fliers pass through security more than twice as fast as other customers

A new "precheck" program adopted by the Transportation Security Administration appears to be working. The program allows passengers to pass through security without removing their shoes and belts - a cumbersome, time-consuming requirement.

Passengers can now be screened through a precheck security lane. Started last fall, the program has expanded to 26 airports and may be offered at 35 by year's end, USA Today reported.

Domestic travelers who are select frequent fliers for Alaska, America, Delta, United or US Airways qualify for the speedy security check. So do members of the Border Protection Trusted Traveler program.

The agency plans to extend the program to other carriers.

The program reduces delays in security lines and moves things along in general. Precheck passengers may keep their clothing on, retain their laptops and even keep liquids in their carry-on luggage.

A spokesman for United said that precheck fliers pass through security more than twice as fast as other customers.

Passengers have to register with their airline for the program. More airlines are going to be offering this convenience.

It seems like an improvement. Such changes are needed.
