Sept. 14--The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $2.7 million grant to Lexington's Blue Grass Airport to pay for completed improvements to the site's general aviation runway and additional enhancements.
"We are grateful for the excellent working relationship we have with the FAA and are appreciative of their assistance with these projects," executive director Eric Frankl said in a statement.
The majority of the money will be applied to the completed improvements on the airport's 4,000-foot runway, used by private and corporate general aviation aircraft, said spokeswoman Amy Caudill.
The runway, unveiled in the latter half of 2010, replaced a 3,500-foot runway and was designed so it is safer for general aviation aircraft in crosswinds.
Its location also provides more space for aircraft parking and hangar development.
The remaining money from the grant will be used to help widen taxiways, Caudill said.
That project will allow the facility to accommodate more aircraft. It is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
