WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 -- The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration issued the following press release:

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants totaling $32.9 million for runway safety area (RSA) improvements at Oakland International Airport.

This infrastructure investment will help ensure the safety of passengers and crew using Oakland International Airport," LaHood said. "Investing in our nation's airports also creates well-paying jobs and promotes economic growth."

The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants will pay for expanding the RSAs on both ends of Oakland's 10,000 foot-long primary runway. RSAs protect passengers and crew if an aircraft overruns, undershoots, or veers off the side of the runway. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2013 and be completed by the end of the year.

"Enhancing runway safety areas has been a national priority for the FAA," said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. "These grants will help achieve the highest possible runway safety standards at Oakland."

AIP provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for airport improvement projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity, and environmental stewardship of our nation's airports. More than 3,300 airports are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations, and general aviation activities throughout the nation.
