Southwest To Drop Service Between BWI And EWR

United continues to offer four daily flights from BWI to Newark

Southwest Airlines will discontinue service from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to Newark, N.J., beginning next March 10.

The carrier has offered three daily nonstop flights from Baltimore to Newark since June 2011.

Southwest didn't realize the anticipated demand for the service, said Paul Flaningan, the airline's spokesman. He added that consumers tend to drive or take the train between the two cities.

The airline cited the same reason last month when it said it would end three daily flights between BWI and LaGuardia Airport in New York.

Southwest offers 178 daily nonstop flights to 48 cities from Baltimore.

United Airlines continues to offer four daily flights from BWI to Newark, said Jonathan O. Dean, spokesman for the Maryland Aviation Administration, which owns and operates the airport.
