Hawaii-bound jet out of Oakland makes unscheduled landing at SFO

March 19--A Hawaii-bound airliner that left from Oakland on Sunday morning had to turn around and land at San Francisco International Airport after an engine failed, an airport official said.

Hawaiian Airlines Flight 47 was supposed to depart from Oakland at 9:45 a.m. and land at Honolulu's airport on Oahu at 12:20 p.m., according to the airline's online flight schedule. But instead, it landed at SFO at 11:20 a.m., said San Francisco International Airport duty manager Chris Davison.

The engine that failed was the number one, or left engine, Davison said. The passengers were bused to Oakland, she said.

Davison referred additional inquiries to the airline, which did not immediately return calls.

According to the airline's website, the Flight 47 aircraft is a two-engine Boeing 767-300.
