The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee issued the following news release:
U.S. Rep. John L. Mica (R-FL) and Orlando Sanford International Airport President Larry Dale will hold a press conference to announce reform of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and airport security screening tomorrow, Tuesday, March 13, 2012.
Mica, the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, will address the Airport Authority Board at 10:30 a.m., followed immediately by an 11:00 a.m. press conference at the Airport.
Mica worked to include provisions in federal aviation legislation he wrote, recently signed into law, ensuring all airports retain the right to opt out of the all-federal security screening model under the TSA. Airports have the right to select the screening model in which certified private screeners operate under federal standards and oversight.
Orlando Sanford Airport has previously applied to opt out but their applications were denied by TSA early in 2011. The Mica-supported language in the new law was included as a result of TSA's attempts to thwart the opt-out program, officially known as the Screening Partnership Program, and the intent of Congress when it established TSA and the opt-out program in 2001.
