Airport Eco Project Hits Second Phase

The first part of the project involved the installation of charging points for electric vehicles. The plan was part of the airport's target to make ground operations carbon neutral by 2012.

East Midlands Airport has started spending the proceeds of an environmental fund to help support a hydroelectric power project in Turkey. A levy charged on vehicles on the runway side of the airport is pooled for a hydropower project that represents an annual emissions reduction of 19,510 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Neil Robinson, airport director of sustainability, said: "We are very excited to be supporting such a worthwhile project in one of our most popular holiday destinations." This is the second part of a project designed to help businesses operating at East Midlands Airport to reduce the environmental impact of their onsite vehicles.

The first part of the project involved the installation of charging points for electric vehicles. The plan was part of the airport's target to make ground operations carbonneutral by 2012.

Mr Robinson said: "While we are on track to hit our carbon neutral target in 2012, we think it is paramount to help other companies to be greener."
