The union representing about 14,000 Northwest Airlines Corp. ground workers said Saturday it had agreed to present the company's contract settlement proposal to its members.
"Our negotiators were able to convince Northwest to move off of some of their initial proposals," said International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 143 President Bobby DePace in a press release. "Many of our ideas are contained in the company's settlement proposal."
Northwest will ask a bankruptcy court judge for permission to reject its labor contracts for pilots, flight attendants and ground workers at a trial set to begin Tuesday, if the company does not reach any agreement with the three unions.
IAM said it will ask the judge to postpone the union's portion of the trial until the ratification results are known.
"The language is being finalized and reviewed, and we should have the complete terms available to present to the members in a few days," said Joseph Tiberi, a union spokesman.
Northwest is still in contract negotiations with its pilots and flight attendants.

A bankruptcy court on Tuesday approved nearly $550 million in concessions between Northwest Airlines Corp. and two of its unions representing pilots, baggage handlers and ground workers.
