American Eagle Won't Charge for Beverages

FORT WORTH -- Soda, coffee and tea will remain freebies on American Eagle, but passengers might need to open their wallets if they want cashews or pillows.

Executives with Eagle, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, said Monday that they had decided against charging for nonalcoholic drinks during flights. In January, the airline tested charging for drinks on some flights in California.

"Based on customer feedback, we decided not to test that any further," airline spokesman Dave Jackson said.

However, Eagle did receive "more positive feedback" on sales of cashews and pillows and blankets, he said.

"We're potentially looking toward doing more with that," he said.

Eagle also revamped the snack box that it sells during flights for $3, making it more appealing to morning fliers with an oatmeal bar and raisins.

"The heaviest sale is during the morning," Jackson said.

More airlines are selling everything from food to entertainment devices during flights as they attempt to boost revenues. Some experts have predicted that the industry could soon move to an "a la carte" style of service where airlines charge fees for assigned seating, aisle seats, drinks and the ability to check or carry on luggage.

American pulled pillows off its flights last year, citing the cost of cleaning the airplane between trips.

It has also eliminated food service on nearly all domestic flights.
