American Airlines Increases Surcharges

American Airlines said Tuesday it is increasing the fuel surcharge on some of its international flights to help offset rising fuel costs.

American, the nation's biggest carrier and a unit of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp., said it raised the fuel surcharges $10 one-way or $20 round-trip, with a few exceptions, on fares to and from most of its trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific destinations.

The increase is effective immediately.

Persistently high fuel prices have become one of the airline industry's most enduring financial problems.

A barrel of crude settled at $68.98 Tuesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after topping $69 earlier for the first time this year. Crude futures are 27 percent higher than a year ago, but still below the August 2005 record of $70.85.
