AirTran to Start Fort Lauderdale Flight

Sept. 5, 2006
The Newport News/Williamsburg airport will get another daily nonstop link to Florida.

A Florida tourist city - Fort Lauderdale - will join the list of cities served nonstop from Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

On Wednesday, AirTran Airways announced direct flights to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport starting Nov. 7. Prices for Newport News-Fort Lauderdale tickets weren't available Wednesday. But an AirTran spokeswoman said no special introductory deals were planned.

With this new route in November, AirTran will serve five cities nonstop from Newport News - Atlanta; Boston; Fort Lauderdale; Orlando, Fla.; and New York. Delta Air Lines also flies nonstop from Newport News to Atlanta and Orlando. US Airways flies nonstop to Charlotte, N.C., and Philadelphia.

AirTran said Boeing 717s would fly the new route. A flight will leave Newport News at 10:57 a.m. daily and arrive in Fort Lauderdale at 1:22 p.m. The Fort Lauderdale-Newport News flight will leave at 1:57 p.m. daily and arrive at 4:17 p.m.

"We are excited about the new nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale," the Newport News airport's executive director, Jim Smith, said in a news release. "AirTran Airways' quality service will bring low fares to the more than 100,000 people that annually fly between Fort Lauderdale and southern Virginia and attract new passengers, as well."
