The first flight on a controversial new air route took off from Toronto's City Centre airport Monday, leaving protesters voicing opposition on the waterfront below.
Porter Airlines plans to run 10 round-trip weekday runs to the federal capital of Ottawa and eventually expand to Montreal, New York and other major destinations. The maiden flight left on time at 7 a.m. from the airport at the southern tip of the city on Lake Ontario.
A rally opposing the new flights drew at least 30 placard-carrying protesters from a group called Community Air. They are opposed to the flights because of pollution and safety concerns.
Porter Airlines CEO Robert Deluce called it a great day for travelers looking for competition and convenience when they fly. The airline is banking on business commuters who want to avoid the commute and long wait-times at Pearson International Airport outside of Toronto.
