Siemens Wins $50.8M LAX Baggage Handling Contract
The Airport Logistics Division of Siemens Energy & Automation Inc, part of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI), has been awarded a contract from Clark/McCarthy for a baggage handling system with integrated explosive detection screening for Los Angeles International Airport.
The contract, valued at USD50.8m, is part of the renovation of the airport's Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT).
The total cost of the TBIT renovation has been set at USD575.6m and the project will encompass major interior renovations of the one-million-square-foot terminal; a 45,000 square foot expansion to accommodate the installation of a new in-line, checked-baggage security system; and a new boarding gate for large aircraft, such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787. The 38-month renovation, including the baggage handling system, is expected to be completed in March 2010.
Siemens will provide 14,596 feet of conveyor, six claim units and 57 high-speed diverters and will integrate 13 explosive detection systems into the in-line security system. The company will also provide overall project management, system integration and installation.
