A stowaway found dead in the wheel well of a British Airways jet that landed in Los Angeles this week was identified as a South African teenager.

The body of Samuel Peter Benjamin, 17, was found by a pilot Sunday afternoon in the front wheel well of a Boeing 747-400 during a routine inspection at Los Angeles International Airport.

Craig Harvey, operations chief for the Los Angeles County coroner's office, said Tuesday that an autopsy had been conducted, although a cause of death has yet to be determined.

Alan Moore, South Africa's consul in Los Angeles, said Benjamin's family in the Cape Town area had been contacted.

British Airways Flight 283 had arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday from London's Heathrow Airport. Before that, it had made trips to Hong Kong; Singapore; Cape Town, South Africa; and Vancouver, officials said.

The FBI was trying to determine where the youth boarded. The flight was last in Cape Town on Jan. 22.
