US Airways plans to ask a judge to approve its exit from bankruptcy court and subsequent merger with America West Airlines at a Sept. 15 court hearing.

US Airways plans to ask a judge to approve its exit from bankruptcy court and subsequent merger with America West Airlines at a Sept. 15 court hearing, according to court documents filed late Monday.

That timeline would position the airlines to close on the merger in early October, assuming the merger plan wins approval from America West shareholders, US Airways creditors and a federal loan board.

The airlines have said they hope to have a deal completed around Oct. 1, although integrating the companies is expected to take a few years.
