MODESTO, Calif. -- Officials want to make it easier for residents to get to Southern California with direct flights from Modesto to Los Angeles International Airport.

The city of Modesto received a $550,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help establish more air routes from Modesto Airport to other areas of the state. Airport officials said they are in talks with Horizon Airlines to start Los Angeles flight.

"Horizon Air was extremely supportive when we applied for the grant," airport manager Michael Musca said.

United Express has flown from Modesto to San Francisco since 1995 and now has four flights a day.

Modesto previously discontinued direct flights to Los Angeles and Las Vegas in 1984. Direct flights to San Jose ended in 1982.

Modesto isn't the only airport in the area looking to expand routes. Stockton officials said they are in talks with an airline to offer flights to Mexico.
