Williamsport Regional Airport plans to ask Northwest Airlines to offer service to Detroit, and has federal grants to subsidize the flights.

Airport officials are hoping for three flights a day to Detroit, which would give area travelers access to a hub that has connecting flights to the West Coast and Asia.

The only carrier serving the airport now is US Airways Express, which flies to Philadelphia. The airline stopped flights to Pittsburgh last year.

U.S. Rep. John Peterson obtained a $500,000 federal grant that must be matched by $100,000 from local partners to subsidize the service for one year, said David L. Frey, the airports marketing manager.

Northwest Airlines has its two largest hubs in Minnesotas Twin Cities and Detroit.
