MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The union for Northwest Airlines' flight attendants has explained more about an FBI investigation into a small number of flight attendants.

The union said Thursday that the FBI is investigating allegations that one or more flight attendants tampered with smoke detectors on a flight from Japan last week.

Professional Flight Attendants Association spokesman Peter Fiske said the union has ''no reason to believe these allegations are true.''

He said incidents involving tampering with smoke detectors aren't uncommon.

Union officials said they were alerted Aug. 25 that the FBI was greeting the crew of a flight from Osaka, Japan, when it arrived in Detroit. Fiske said the airline had contacted the Federal Aviation Administration, which called in the FBI.

A spokesman for the FBI's Detroit office declined to comment Thursday.

A company statement given to The Associated Press Wednesday said Northwest ''believes that these alleged actions do not represent the behavior of the vast majority'' of its flight attendants.
