Sept. 29, 2005
The award not only recognises the airport's outstanding business achievements, but its significant growth and development of new markets.

Bristol International Airport has been recognised as one of the region's most inspirational and successful companies following today's announcement that it has received the coveted Beacon company status award. The award not only recognises the airport's outstanding business achievements, but its significant growth and development of new markets.

Bristol International Airport has experienced tremendous growth in the past 18 months. The airport, which annually contributes GBP40 million to the local economy as well as GBP200 million to the regional economy, is currently the second fastest growing airport in the UK, having handled five million passengers in the last twelve months. 2005 has seen the introduction of an additional 12 scheduled routes, three new scheduled airlines and the commencement of the region's first direct daily service to New York with Continental Airlines.

The airport joins a select group of Beacon companies which have been recognised for their innovation, performance, profitability, positive culture and business practices. There are currently over 100 businesses across the South West who are members of Beacon, including Oscar-winning animators Aardman, Triodos Bank, Midas Group and Elizabeth Shaw.

The awarding of Beacon company status for Bristol International Airport follows its continued growth and development, which in the last year alone has seen a GBP15 million investment in enhanced terminal facilities.

"Businesses that have been awarded Beacon company status play an important role in cultivating the enterprise excellence that exists in the region and spearheading growth," said Sue Baker, project director at Beacon South West, which is funded by the South West of England Regional Development Agency. "The network consists of a diverse range of forward-thinking companies who have attained great success in their field of business. These organisations act as leading business lights to inspire others and share knowledge in order to advance the regional economy as a whole."

Andrew Skipp, managing director of Bristol International Airport, said: "We have come a long way since the opening of the new terminal in 2000. In the last twelve months alone we have seen substantial growth, not only in terms of the expansion of our route network which now exceeds 100 destinations, but also in terms of services to meet the needs of our growing passenger numbers. This factor, combined with the investment we have made in staff development, our infrastructure, and commitment to constantly improve, has led to Beacon South West's recognition of Bristol Airport as a model business."

Note to editors: Beacon South West brings together some of the South West's most forward thinking and ambitious companies to promote success and spearhead the growth of the region.

Supported by the South West of England Regional Development Agency, Beacon South West is an award given to those companies who can demonstrate outstanding achievement across a range of criteria, including significant improvements in productivity and performance, profitability, work culture and innovation.

Beacon South West members play an important role in cultivating enterprise excellence in the region.

Bristol International is the UK's fourth largest regional airport and now serves 100 direct destinations and an additional 450 destinations via international connections.

Bristol International's catchment area covers 10 counties in the West of England and South Wales. Over five million passengers are expected to fly from the airport this year, one million more passengers than from all other airports in the South West and Wales combined.

The airport has one of the largest networks of low cost services outside of London with direct flights to 34 destinations in the UK and Western Europe. A total of 37 Scheduled and Charter airlines now operate from Bristol International, including the region's only direct flight to New York.
