Broadway Actor Makes Joke, Handcuffed in Airport Security Incident
Airport security officers lack a sense of humor. It's pretty much a prerequisite for the job.
So last week, when Denis O'Hare, a Broadway actor starring in Sweet Charity, and his partner, Hugo Redwood, were pulled aside at the Newport News, Va., airport for a second security screening, the smart thing would have been to shut up and let the guards do their job.
Redwood, however, did not.
According to PlanetOut Network, he turned to O'Hare and said, "I guess we must be terrorist suspects."
The National Transportation Security Administration officer who overheard Redwood gave him a stern warning, reminding him what every 6-year-old knows by now: You don't make jokes about terrorism in an airport.
But then a second officer arrived.
He asked Redwood to repeat the remark. So he did, explaining that it was a joke.
"Then he handcuffed me, carried me away in my socks through the airport, and placed me in a detention room. It was a huge deal. At one point there were six officials in the room," Redwood said.
He was charged with disorderly conduct and is scheduled to appear in court this month.
