Comair Pilots to Vote in Jan. on Pay Cuts

Dec. 29, 2005
Comair has said it needs to cut expenses and is seeking concessions from its pilots, flight attendants and mechanics.

Comair pilots will vote next month on the airline's proposed revisions on pay, pension and work rules, a union spokesman said Wednesday.

Comair, a regional subsidiary of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc., has said it needs to cut expenses and is seeking concessions from its pilots, flight attendants and mechanics.

Comair and the 1,800-member branch of the Air Line Pilots Association that represents the company's pilots have been negotiating the changes for two months. When no agreement was reached, the union agreed to submit the company's proposal to members.

Union spokesman Brian Moynihan said the vote would take place in January, but declined further comment.

Delta's 6,000 pilots voted Wednesday to accept a 14 percent pay cut in a deal their union worked out with management to help the bankrupt carrier cope with an expected cash crunch.

The agreement, which the airline said would save $143 million, follows the $1 billion in annual concessions Delta pilots agreed to in a five-year deal reached in 2004.

Delta, which has lost more than $11 billion over the past five years, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September in New York. Last week, it asked the court for a six-month extension to exclusively file its reorganization plan, which is due Jan. 12.
