Delta to Begin SLC-Long Beach Flights in March

When Delta Air Lines begins flying to Long Beach, Calif., from Salt Lake City, the airline will serve 100 destinations from its westernmost hub.

On Tuesday, the nation's No. 3 airline announced plans to offer three daily nonstop flights to Long Beach, beginning March 6.

Delta also said it will offer one daily nonstop flight to New Orleans, starting Jan. 31.

The new routes help secure the ailing airline's commitment to its hub at Salt Lake City International Airport. Since filing for bankruptcy in September, Delta has added service from Salt Lake City to numerous destinations in the United States, Mexico and Canada, but has trimmed flight frequencies on some routes.

"Delta is proud to offer our customers more choices for travel via one of the largest airline hubs in the western United States, with the addition of our 100th Delta destination from Salt Lake City," said Bob Cortelyou, vice president of network planning.

The New Orleans service will be provided by Atlantic Southeast Airlines, a Delta Connection carrier. SkyWest Airlines, another contract carrier for Delta, will fly the Long Beach route.

Since last fall, Delta has added routes to Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; Cleveland; Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.; Hartford, Conn.; Milwaukee; LaGuardia Airport in New York; Edmonton, Alberta; and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Delta plans to start service to Mazatlan, Mexico, in March, if Mexico's government approves.
