Delta to Fly D/FW-LaGuardia

Delta Air Lines is adding service from Dallas/Fort Worth Airport to LaGuardia Airport in New York, marking the carrier's second new city since it closed its hub here.

Executives with Atlanta-based Delta said Monday that they will begin two daily flights to LaGuardia beginning April 3. A third daily flight will launch May 1.

The route will be flown with 70-seat Embraer 170 jets by regional airline Shuttle America, under the Delta Connection name. The airplanes offer first-class and coach service.

The airline is offering introductory fares of $99 each way.

The new flights are part of a larger effort in the New York market, Delta executives said, and don't reflect any major expansion plans at D/FW. The airline, which is currently in bankruptcy, also announced new service from LaGuardia to Chicago O'Hare Airport on Monday.

"Delta means business in New York," Glen Hauenstein, the airline's chief of network planning and revenue management, said in a prepared statement.

In September 2004, Delta announced that it would shut down its D/FW hub, cutting more than 200 flights and laying off thousands of employees in North Texas. The only flights that were retained were to Atlanta, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City.

Late last year, Delta added nonstop flights from D/FW to Orlando, Fla.
